I’m a recovering beauty product junkie. I’m embarrassed to even admit how much money is under my sink in the form of unused toners, masks, lotions, serums and the like. I have almost cured my addiction, but I’m still able to get my fix of trying new things with DIY recipes for at-home masks and treatments like this one. I found this recipe here and have adapted it for my aging, sun-loved skin by using my favorite Young Living essential oil for skin, Frankincense.
The mask that this is based on, costs $65 a pop. I already had the oils on hand, so this only cost me about $20 and I have the supplies for many more masks, as long as my children will still come near me.
Spirulina is a superfood, and when used topically, is a powerful nutrient boost for dull skin that helps promote a youthful appearance. The castor oil helps draw out oils and impurities from your pores. Then, as an extra boost, I added 3 drops of frankincense essential oil to help even out my skin tone and promote healthy skin’s cells.
1) 1 teaspoon castor oil
2) 1 teaspoon spirulina powder
3) 3 drops of Frankincense essential oil (We only recommend Young Living for their commitment to quality)
-you may substitute Melalueca or Lemon for acne-prone skin or Rosemary for mature skin
The castor oil and spirulina were purchased at my local health food’s store, Sprouts. The Young Living essential oil is available here.
Add the powder first to a bowl and then slowly add the castor oil. You want to make a paste similar to mud. Once it’s mixed, add 3 drops of your favorite essential oil and stir together.
Wash your skin and lightly exfoliate.
Smear the mask on thickly and leave on for at least 15 minutes.
Rinse with warm water and a dark colored wash cloth. Be careful as it may stain lighter colors.
I definitely noticed an immediate improvement in my pore size and overall appearance of my troubled skin with just one application. Note: this is not the best smelling mask. My 5 year-old asked me to please move away from him 🙂
